WhatsNearby works by reading a few settings and plotting out a map with various types of businesses (as map markers) near a given location.
For the mapping feature the Google Maps API is used, which enables the user to easily pass the address, zoom level, map width and the radius for which to search for businesses.
The location can be passed as either geographical coordinates (latitude, longitude) or in written address form.
Other configurable features include the ability to use a custom format for the map markers, the ability to choose form Google's map types (hybrid, terrain, roadmap, satellite), and various business search exclusion criteria.
Developers can use custom map marker icons with their maps, and also use different map markers based on the business type.
To search for the businesses themselves, WhatsNearby uses the Google Places API.
A demo is included with the download package.
